Burnley is a large market town in the borough of Burnley in Lancashire, with a population of approximately 73,500. It lies just 11 miles east of Blackburn town and 25 miles east of the City of Preston, at the confluence of the River Calder and River Brun.
It began in the early medieval period as a market town, but its main period of expansion came during the Industrial Revolution, when it became the world's largest producer of cotton cloth. Today, Burnley no longer has much of its industry, and is increasingly a commuting town for Manchester, Leeds and the wider M65 corridor. The public sector is now the town's largest employer.
